Brian G. Hess – Public Servant, Data Strategist, and Community Leader

Brian G. Hess has built a career defined by service, leadership, and results. A U.S. Army veteran with 25 years of distinguished service, he honed his skills in data analysis, operational leadership, and training - experiences that continue to shape his approach to problem-solving and community building.

After earning a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from the University of Washington, Brian transitioned into roles that combined his technical expertise with strategic leadership. As a Product Manager and Data Strategist, he developed growth strategies for Microsoft Azure Data SQL, led cross-functional teams, and created high-impact dashboards and data governance frameworks that empowered executives and teams alike to make smarter, evidence-driven decisions.

In civic life, Brian has served on the Yelm City Council (Position 5) since 2019, where he has worked collaboratively with Mayor DePinto and fellow councilmembers to pass balanced budgets without raising taxes, strengthen public safety through new officer hires, improve infrastructure such as sidewalks and the Southern Loop project, and expand community programs like National Night Out, Galaxy Fest, and senior services. His advocacy also extends to future-minded initiatives such as broadband expansion, intercity transit, and Food-is-Free style community gardening programs to prevent food insecurity.

Passionate about education, libraries, and lifelong learning, Brian has applied his skills toward supporting library operations, adult education, and community engagement strategies. He is also an avid gardener, Eagle Scout, and astronomy enthusiast who enjoys cooking, smoking BBQ, and sharing his love for local wine, whiskey, and microbrews.

At the core of his career - whether in the Army, the tech industry, or city government - is Brian’s belief in service, integrity, and community. He continues to dedicate himself to advancing economic prosperity, building strong neighborhoods, and ensuring Yelm remains a place where all residents can thrive.
